Neil Williams is a British-born artist who moved to Melbourne in 1997 and now lives and works in Flinders on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. His practice is predominantly centred on oil painting and printmaking, with recent work also extending into ceramics.

Williams has developed an ongoing engagement with the Australian landscape, particularly the environments of the Mornington Peninsula and the traces of human occupation within them. Roads, buildings, trees, fences, crossings and other familiar markers recur throughout his work, becoming vehicles for a broader exploration of presence and absence, distance, scale, passage and time.

Working between observation and abstraction, Williams employs a restrained palette and simplified forms to create landscapes that are quiet, spacious and deliberately unresolved. His work is less concerned with depicting a particular place than with what a landscape can suggest, contain or withhold. Familiar environments are subtly displaced, allowing the ordinary to become contemplative and, at times, faintly unsettling.
