BEAUTY IN TIMING

Helen Christophidis

4 – 26 July, 2026

Having lived in Flinders for nearly 30 years, Helen Christophidis has long drawn inspiration from the surrounding landscape. This series of paintings and ceramics reflects memories, sensations and deep connections to Flinders Ocean Beach. Between the cliffs and the ocean, she finds a place of freedom — a space to wander, contemplate and observe. Here, the shifting light, colours, textures and sounds create a beauty that is constantly changing. It is within these fleeting, ephemeral moments that beauty is most intensely felt.
In Greek thought, “beauty” (horaios) is associated with being in one’s perfect place, season or time. “Time” (hora) is the continuous flow of change that both gives rise to beauty and ultimately causes it to fade. Beauty and time are therefore intrinsically linked; beauty exists in timing. Beginning with memory as a point of departure, Christophidis works intuitively. The composition gradually reveals itself as she applies oil paint directly from the tube onto the canvas using palette knife and brush. Layers of paint are built and often scraped back, creating texture and exposing underlying colours. Whether working on large-scale canvases or with clay in her ceramic practice, she explores these transient moments, inviting the viewer to interpret and complete the image for themselves.
