‘Lighthouse Man, I’m all at Sea’ 2025
oil on linen board
25 x 20cm framed
I have always loved the wild coastlines of my home state of Victoria. Lighthouses are a particular fascination, a strong and visible built presence in the untamed coastal landscape, and a physical reminder of European settlement. For generations they have guided shipping away from danger, toward safe passage. That their signals can be seen well out to sea, relying on the use of lenses that reflect and amplify small sources of light to become intense and focussed beams is a source of wonder. I chose to paint the historic Cape Schanck Lighthouse, built in 1859 and still in use today. I chose to title my work with lyrics from the Waifs song, Lighthouse, which also feels true to the MPCAP theme for 2025, REFLECTION. Lighthouse man, I’m all at sea.
