‘The Turning of the Tides’ 2024
graphite pencil on paper
60 x 42cm framed
The turning of the tides is a graphite pencil drawing on paper. It is part of a series of work that depicts intertidal species of seaweed that congregated in the pools along the shoreline of Waratah Bay, Victoria. Working from my own photographic references, the aim was to capture the gesture and textural qualities of these species, alongside the natural rhythm, light, and movement of the tides. The act of drawing these subjects becomes a form of reflection—where the simple lines and organic forms of nature reveal something deeper about the process of seeing, understanding, and being. The monochromatic nature of the medium invites contemplation and evokes memory. Each drawing becomes not only an exploration of form, but also a personal meditation on the passing of time and a reflection of the intricate beauty that lies beneath the surface of the sea.
