‘Reflections in a Stream of Consciousness’ 2025
oil on canvas
53 x 73cm framed
Landscape, as motif, offers a universal point of entry – immediately recognisable, yet infinitely mutable. Landscape can be perceived not merely as depiction, but as a potent image of exploration—a familiar visual language through which the boundaries between representational art and abstraction can be negotiated. This image conveys no sense of time, there is no perspective as elements are juxtaposed, there is no reference of place, no realistic structure of space – a memory of an ephemeral dream, it exists in the consciousness of a floating world, as reflections in a stream of consciousness. The use of gold is a reference to the artworks the Momoyama period in Japan. Gold leaf was often applied on screen panels as part of the imagery, as a glow of light reflected inside the dark interior spaces within traditional Japanese villas. The use of gold is not decorative but an expressive response to the theme of reflection.
