‘I am the Sea, the Sea is Me’ 2025
chinagraph pencil, ink and gouache on board
59 x 42cm framed
Salt drenched and invigorated, exhausted after being buffeted by the waves, a young boy now wrapped in the warmth of a towel, gazes out to sea, relaxed and dreamy yet scanning the surf, looking for the next challenge, reflecting on what that will be. Completely at one with the elements, the figure has become part of the scene, part of the beach. The boy and beach are one. All else is forgotten. This was a moment in time I felt compelled to capture, a moment that repeats with each new generation drawn to the beauty of a wild surf and the joy of diving into it – and afterwards, sitting lost in thought gazing back at the sea. For this work I’ve engaged a process of inking the drawing to both enrich the drawn line with printing ink and subtly enhance the natural textures of the board – an integral part of the composition. The technique allows the drawing to almost become transparent, merging with the textures of the board, emphasizing the notion of the boy becoming one with the beach.
