In My Garden, Kangaroo Paws

acrylic on canvas

This artwork, In My Garden, Kangaroo Paws, was created in two places: a Banksia woodland clearing by the Powlett River and my garden on the Bass Coast. These locations have been central to my exploration of how I relate to and sense the non-human world over the past few years. My goal is to let the landscape guide me, staying open and receptive enough to truly ‘hear’ its voice. Just before spring this year, beneath my drooping Eucalyptus Caesia, the yellow kangaroo paws began to emerge, their heads popping up from their winter rest. Sitting among them, I captured the joy they brought to life. This piece expresses the excitement, playfulness, gratitude, awe, love, and humility I feel when immersed in nature. It’s a celebration of new beginnings.
