Christabel Wigley

Christabel Wigley is an Artist based in Somers, Boon Wurrung/Bunurong on the Mornington Peninsula.

Christabel’s sculpture practice is deeply rooted in exploring the connections between various themes, expressions, and the environments in which they exist. By focusing on “place making”, “site responsiveness”, “spatial form”, and “environmental integration”, she emphasises the importance of context and interaction within her artistic process. Christabel see’s the work developing a consciousness of its own, suggesting an organic evolution, wherein the sculpture becomes more than just a static object but rather a dynamic entity that interacts with its surroundings and viewers. This approach aligns with concepts of intersubjectivity and intuition, acknowledging the role of both personal interpretation and shared understanding in the creation of the artwork.

Having spent the early part of her career in film and theatre, Christabel uncovered her passion for sculpture while studying Arts in New York City in the 1990’s. Since returning to Australia and settling in Somers her work has been greatly influenced by the natural environment and strongly influenced by her late father, James Wigley, who spent time living and painting with the Indigenous peoples of North-Western Australia.

As well as Sculpture, Christabel’s practice incorporates a range of media including sound, video, installation, painting and photo – based media.
