There are invisible threads connecting us to places and people. Some places seem to call us to them. I feel deeply drawn in this way to the area I call home (the Southern Peninsula). My regular back beach walks yield much inspiration and nourishment. Each time I return I witness the nuances within the ever cyclical rhythms of the land and the elements. Like any relationship which is fostered, the symbiosis and respect grows deeper over time. I find the textures, shapes and landscapes I surround myself with organically seep into my work. My process is spontaneous raw and emotive. It often involves building layers followed by extraction, whereby scraping tools and implements are involved. Like the receding tide, some of what was concealed is exposed. The textures and patterns echo those created by elemental processes. I primarily use oil paint and like to layer a mix of mediums like polymers, charcoal and pastels.
