My landscape paintings are mostly of places that I’ve noticed in my roaming around where I live. When the light is good I will make small studies en-plein air, in oil, on panels. In trickier conditions, I may sit in the car and draw, using an iPad. I have about 3 hours before the light has changed too much to continue. In my studio, the studies informed this new body of work. Here I was able to simplify the shapes of the subjects and explore their colour relationships and values. The old houses and gardens, the huge trees, the roads and nature strips under the high summer skies or the low, clear winter light, seem both familiar and fragile.
