‘I met a snake out walking’ 2024 is a small intimate textile work. It represents an aerial view of a beach track on Bunurong country. It is inspired by a real event that occurred in May this year. Whilst out walking, I saw a black snake. I was both mesmerised and fearful as I saw its smooth undulating form move slowly into the scrub, not fearing me, so I stood quietly and watched it cross my path. I was reminded I’m not alone, I’m new here, I share this land with its inhabitants. I am curious, what is the snake’s perspective, how does it see the land? It’s lower to the ground, more connected to the texture and rhythms of the land. I move above the land and I wondered if I lowered my body to be at snake level, what would I learn about the place I like to walk? My aim was to capture some sense of that moment in a punch needle experiment. I used a range of fibres to emulate the warmth, colours and textures of the habitat of the snake which rests curled, sleeping, secure.
