When I wear something that is handmade by an artisan, I am drawn in by the design detail, the colour, weave and feel of the fabric or thread. I feel a connection to the maker and their traditions and story. Similarly, when I walk in the bush, I look carefully at the minutiae, the nuances and what speaks of place. Walks in the bush soothe and nourish me, regulating me when I am stressed. This walk on the edges of Lake Tyers at Lonely Bay challenged my sense of security. I drove some distance through bushland, down a steep potholed gravel track in mid-afternoon. I didn’t see a soul. I walked for an hour on a track above the water’s edge. My overactive imagine had me on high alert and my heart rate was up. I was completely alone in an isolated location. The counterpoint to my anxiety was seeing pale pink Brachyscome growing wild in the bush. The wattles were out in full force heralding Spring. The colour and details sparked joy and drew me in.
